2. Main purpose

Catalyst: Used for Ziegler Natta catalysts in polymerization reactions, such as the production of polyethylene and polypropylene.
Titanium metal production: Titanium metal is produced by the magnesium reduction method (Kroll method).
Organic synthesis: Participate in organic chemical reactions as a chlorinating agent or catalyst.
Optical coating: used for preparing optical thin films and coatings.

Physical properties: Titanium tetrachloride is a colorless or slightly yellow fuming liquid with a pungent odor. It is miscible with many organic solvents, but reacts violently with water.
Chemical properties: Titanium tetrachloride has strong chemical activity. It is a Lewis acid that can react with Lewis bases to form various complexes. In the air, titanium tetrachloride reacts quickly with water vapor to generate titanium dioxide and hydrogen chloride gas, producing white smoke. This property makes it useful in the military for making smoke bombs.
Precautions
Toxicity: Titanium tetrachloride has a certain degree of toxicity and has a strong irritating effect on the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. Contact with the skin can cause burns, and inhalation of its smoke can cause respiratory inflammation, pulmonary edema, etc. During use and storage, strict protective measures must be taken, such as wearing protective glasses, gloves, respirators, etc.
Corrosiveness: Titanium tetrachloride will generate hydrochloric acid and hydrogen chloride when it comes into contact with water. The relative humidity in the warehouse should be kept at a low level to prevent titanium tetrachloride from absorbing moisture in the air and deteriorating. At the same time, titanium tetrachloride should be stored separately from oxidants, alkalis and other substances, and mixed storage should not be allowed.
Emergency treatment: During use, if titanium tetrachloride leaks, the surrounding personnel should be evacuated immediately and the leaked contaminated area should be isolated. Emergency treatment personnel should wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus, wear acid and alkali resistant work clothes, and do not directly contact the leaked material.
In case of a small leakage, it can be mixed with sand, dry lime or soda ash, and then collected and transported to a waste disposal site for disposal. In case of a large leakage, a dike should be built or a pit should be dug to contain it, and it should be transferred to a tank truck or special collector with a pump for recycling or transported to a waste disposal site for disposal.
